5 Ways to Speed Up Your Internet Connection

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

At some point in time, everyone experiences a slow or dragging Internet connection. It can be extremely frustrating when browsing the information superhighway at a slow stagger. Rest assured, there are actions that you can take to prevent your Internet connection from slowing down. These elements are standard maintenance and should be performed regularly for the best results. So, I have tried to list down the points which could help you speed up your internet connection .

1. Check Your Connection: It may sound simple, but most Internet slow downs are caused by an incorrect connection to your network or Internet Service Provider. The poor souls who are stuck using dial-up Internet can try to use a different access number that has fewer people trying to connect. Most of the time, using a different access number will speed you up especially during peak Internet traffic hours. If you are using a broadband connection, be sure which network you are using. Many times, your computer will latch on to any available network in your area. You can be connected to the network of your neighbor and not even know it. You could be receiving low signal strength that can really slow down your connection.

2. Secure Your Network: Internet users who make the jump from dial-up to broadband are in such a hurry that they do not think to secure their network router from outside access. Anyone can access an unsecured network if their computer is in range of it by using Wi-Fi. This network sharing method steals your available bandwidth without you ever knowing it. Your router could be giving away free IP addresses to anyone that makes requests. In your router configuration settings, disable network sharing and secure your network with a password or passphrase. This way, anyone who attempts to connect to your network must enter your secret password. If they do not know the password, they cannot steal your connection. This will greatly improve your Internet speed.

3. Clear Your DNS Cache: Each time that your computer makes a request to visit a website, it secretly traces the IP address from the host name. This IP trace may be requested by thousands of users at the same time. Therefore, your local computer creates its own log file for IP address information known as DNS cache. This may not sound like a big deal, but you can easily visit hundreds of websites in a short time. This log data is used by your computer when trying to access a website. Instead of relying on third party DNS servers, your computer searches its own log file. This log file can hold large amounts of data or even become corrupted. Clearing this file often will speed up your Internet connection and keep the log file from becoming a problem.

4. Delete Temporary Files: Your computer stores every byte of information from each website that you visit. This information is stored in temporary data files on your computer for faster access to the websites in the future. The theory is that this method makes pages load faster since the information has already been stored on your computer. While this is true, it can also slow down your Internet connection if you do not delete the files you do not need. Regularly deleting unused temporary files will speed up your Internet connection and save valued storage space on your hard drive.

5. Turn Off Virus Protection [Potentially Harmful]: Modern virus scanning software constantly operates in the background. Most do a fantastic job of scanning files and folders for possible attacks. However, it also is using your bandwidth to send and receive data updates from the software company web server. By simply disabling your virus software while browsing the Internet, your bandwidth will increase and your Internet connection will be faster. When you need a virus protection scan in the future, enable the program for scanning.

Learning how your Internet connection can be misused is the first step to making it faster. Adhering to these tips will keep your Internet connection safe and fast.

Niche Analysis Tool: Online vs Desktop Software

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Should you analyze your competition using online niche analysis tool, or should you use niche analysis software installed on your PC? Check out the differences between them and choose the one which works best for you.

1.Installation

Online niche analysis tool has no installation hassles, and it does not change any files on your computer since you use it with a web browser.

There is a slight chance that a desktop niche analysis tool can bring some troubles while installation. The reason for that lies in incompatibilities with software already installed on your computer or with your hardware.

2.Convenience

It’s obvious that online niche analysis tool allows researching your competitors where ever there is an Internet connection. If you use software installed on your work station, you can make your analysis at home only. It stands to reason that working with online niche analysis tool is convenient to those who need to work from different locations.

3.Updates

Conventional desktop software either automatically checks for updates or often notifies you to check for updates. There is a possibility that an update can conflict with other software installed on your PC.

In the meantime, online niche analysis tool is updated automatically on the file server hosting it. Thus, as soon as you run a web browser, all necessary updates are already installed.

4.Back up

Online services save all the data while you work until you log out. If you are a desktop software user, make sure that the software backs up data automatically after you close it. If not, back up it yourself to   a USB thumb drive, re-writable CD or network attached server (NAS). Do not use your hard drive as your only back up medium. If the drive fails, you will have to start your niche analysis from scratch.

5.Security

Keeping the data locally without using a safe anti-virus, you risk having your computer and data hacked. Online niche analysis tools are much safer for that matter since most of them protect and encrypt data files. Check the privacy and security policies of online services to be sure that the one you use is secure.

Taking all that into account, now you can choose either online niche analysis tool or desktop software.

If you choose to analyze your competition from desktop, I recommend Web Ceo. It’s popular multi-purpose software which helps to find keywords and analyze your niche as well as carries many other useful functions.

To explore niche, type your website-related keyword and the found suggestions will be displayed at once. Click on any keyword, and you will see websites that use this keyword in their META keywords tags, as well as their other keywords. Click the “View competitors” tab, and drop a look at the competition for top-10 rankings. Web Ceo comes both with free and paid editions (ranging from $199 to $389).

Much more affordable online alternative is Niche Analysis Tool by EasySeoTracking. It lets you face your competitors and provides their basic SEO parameters, i.e. PR, number of backlinks, keywords in URL and titles, unique visitors by Compete, requests per month by Google, etc. Daily, weekly or monthly reports are available via email to every premium member for $5.95 only.

What is cloud computing and why should you use it?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

If you keep an ear to the tech buzz, you have undoubtedly heard the term “cloud computing” associated with a number of various services.  Many businesses are trying to decide if moving their applications or data into the “cloud” is a good idea.  Some of those businesses may not even fully understand what the cloud is.  But what is undeniable is that some of the businesses that have tried it reported financial gain as a result of it, and that has naturally  ignited the curiosity of others.  A special thanks to dedicated server company 34SP.com for providing valuable input on this piece.

According to the encylopedia at pcmag.com, cloud computing is “Using the Web server facilities of a third party provider on the Internet (the “cloud”) to store, deploy and run applications.”

The cloud hosting service can either provide only the infrastructure (operating system, database, etc.), or provide software as a service (SaaS), which actually includes the software applications themselves.

One of the major benefits of cloud computing is that the business or organization does not have to own the necessary hardware, software, or data center to host whatever components of their systems they keep in the cloud.

A possible disadvantage of cloud computing is that the business must depend on the reliability of the cloud hosting service.  That dependence includes the expectation of uptime, backups, and redundancy, but it also includes the expectation that the cloud host will protect privacy and not use hosted data for their own commercial gains without permission.

Web Applications

Many individuals use cloud computing without even realizing it.  Every time you check your Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, or Hotmail account, you are using a cloud service.  At one time, few would trust a third party to store all of their emails, but now, consumer use of such services is widespread.  Other web applications, such as online word processors, are also forms of cloud computing.  While you may only use them on an individual basis, some businesses have adopted them as their primary solutions for office and productivity applications.

Companies like Google and IBM provide cloud applications to their business customers, allowing them to use their own domains and web presence to make the applications appear as if they are part of their websites.

Content Delivery

If you already have a large web presence, the web applications themselves may not be what you need hosted off site.  With most websites, content is king.  It is the content that makes money, and it is the delivery of that content that can bog down a server with and overload of requests.

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) copies website content (images, videos, etc.) and distributes those copies on diverse servers over a large geographic range.  Users close to a server in a particular region will receive the content from that region, rather than directly from the website.  All of this occurs seamlessly, without the user knowing that the content is being served from an alternate location.

The intent of a CDN is to decrease site load times for website visitors while also reducing the load on the site’s server.  It is particularly useful for sites that distribute a great deal of content.  Some examples of CDNs are Amazon CloudFront and Akami.

Data Storage

Another popular form of cloud computing is data storage.  Like web applications, many people use online data storage without realizing that it falls in the category of cloud computing.  Services like Dropbox, Mozy, and SpiderOak provide online backup, syncing, and remote storage of user data.

Businesses rely on more robust online storage services, such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), but the idea is essentially the same.  Whether the purpose is for backup, redundancy, or database hosting, the result is that the business can purchase cheap remote storage space and not have to invest in more physical servers, software, and employees to manage them.

Is it Right for You?

The answer to that question is that it depends on who you are and your individual and business needs.  There are many scenarios where cloud computing might be ideal.  Here are a few examples:

A small business with minimal resources may decide that it requires too many server resources and too much technical expertise to run their own mail servers.  A a result, they decide to use cloud hosting for their email applications.

A large company that serves millions of daily website visitors needs to distribute large volumes of images quickly and efficiently.  They elect to use a Content Delivery Network.

An SMB (small to medium-sized business) needs an affordable backup solution for their server that doesn’t involve purchasing another expensive server or data storage device.  They move their backups to a cloud storage service.

As you can see, individuals as well as small, medium, and large businesses can all benefit from cloud computing, and any of the types mentioned above can easily be applied to any type of business.

Nevertheless, not all businesses will need or want cloud hosting.  When a business has their own data center, their own technical support staff, and their own robust infrastructure, it may make more sense to leave things as they are.  A small business with not much in the way of data, content, or application needs, may not have a reason to use cloud services at all.  Like using any hosting service, you should evaluate your needs, examine the research, and make an informed decision
